Fashion jobs and retail jobs in the 2012 UK market

I read on here that there were a number of you looking to find a job in the UK – is that right? Well, let me help you. The Uk employment market, as most of you will know has been severely effected by the 2007 recession. Unfortunately it does not look like they are out of the recession even though it is 5 years later, now in 2012 – currently the unemployment figures in the UK are looking at around 2.6 million people. So what does that mean for you? Well, if you are coming from abroad, you will be competing against a lot of UK unemployed people looking for work.

Given that this is a retail and fashion site, I thought it appropriate to talk about these sectors and how they are doing in the UK at the moment. Both these sectors have been really hit hard by the recession with a lot of big brands having gone bust. So if you are looking for jobs in retail or a for a fashion job you are going to have to work hard to get one. The good news is that looking for jobs in the UK is quite easy in that there are a lot of great job sites that allow you to apply for jobs via the internet. Some of the bigger jobsites include Reed, Monster and Totaljobs. If you are looking for retail jobs specific websites, then there are these too. Simply use your search engine, or even better conduct a job search on google.co.uk for roles within the retail sector and you are bound to come across many of these sites.

Likewise if fashion jobs are your thing, simply do the same. There are lots of job sites that cater for this market, and even the bigger fashion houses have their own online jobs presence and you can apply for jobs with them directly. remember, when applying for jobs on these sites, you need to have a CV ready to upload. Many of these sites allow you to apply for fashion jobs through their site, but also keep a copy of your CV for fashion or retail employers to find you. This is a bonus because the job site is working for you, rather than you having to do all the work. good luck with your job search!

Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day gives the opportunity for children to show their mothers just how much they are appreciated and loved. Flowers and special treats are great traditional gifts, but how about something a little different? Give a gift a mother will be able to use and remind her of her children’s love.

Baskets
A gift basket is always a good idea for a Mother’s Day gift. Fill it with things she loves using a theme. A mom who loves to smell good and wants her environment to be delicately scented would love a basket filled with perfume, scented air fresheners, lotions, powders, and scented candles. A mother who likes to cook would appreciate a basket filled with all types of interesting kitchen gadgets and a new set of pretty ceramic bowls that double as the basket itself. Build a basket filled with nail polish, polish remover, nail files and other nail care items for a mother who loves to do her own manicure. A mother who likes to read would appreciate a basket filled with some paperbacks, a magazine with a yearly subscription, some book markers and a book light. A mother who does crafts appreciates crafting supplies piled in a basket like yarn, knitting needles or crochet hooks, scrapbooking supplies or jewelry making tools.

Jewelry
Mothers always appreciate jewelry, but make sure it is appropriate for her style and taste. Big floppy earrings are not appropriate for a mother who dresses conservatively. A mother’s ring is one that has each of her children’s birthstone on it. Get her a single ring or small individual stacking rings with the birthstone of each child. A bracelet is another good idea for a gift especially when it contains a charm pertaining to the life and loves of her child. Look for old fashion charms shaped like different items or the more modern variety that come shaped like a bead.

Pampering
Give a gift of a day at the spa or a gift certificate to a mother’s favorite salon for a hair styling. Give a certificate to a favourite restaurant or a book of certificates to see several movies. Another good idea is to take a mother out on the town and spend time with her.

Whether it is a gift of a basket, bracelet or night on the town, make sure the gift is something she will remember forever. Tell her she is loved and appreciated beyond compare.

Ode to My Favourite T-shirts

As I have begun to emerge into the adult world of office drudgery like a cloyingly idealistic butterfly ready to be crushed against the windscreen of inevitability I find my once burgeoning collection of t-shirts to have dwindled to a few scraggly refugees of sartorial editing; as such, this blog post is meant as a memorial to those fallen in the service of clothing my back.

Go Gryffindor

I bought this gem at a charity shop junior year of high school. I remember because it was shortly after I got my first (and so far, last) car. It looks the same way an imitation football jersey, though on closer inspection it was, in fact a Gryffindor jersey. I had to put this bad boy down last year after 7 great years of service. The collar had frayed completely around and holes had started forming on all the seams. While threadbare-ness is a desired attribute of the t-shirt, they should be retired as soon as holes start forming as these are not acceptable for public.

Ratt ‘n’ Roll

This was by far the apple of its daddy’s (my) eye. It was a replica Ratt band t-shirts and featured a rat with electrical wires leading from its exposed brain to a mixing board. But like all white t-shirts it showed its age much more honestly than a t-shirt of any different color. I reckon that white t-shirts have a life of about a year before needing to be thrown out. I wore this one for about 4 years, until the underarm stains were so vile and had become so large that it was no longer a pleasure to wear this t-shirt. It was a sad day getting rid of this one, but this is the reason I now try to not buy white t-shirts. Though when I do, it is with the understanding our relationship will be torrid and short lived.

Smoking Puma

This baby came to me the way all good t-shirts should, via hand-me-down. I was home from my first year of college and after attending a wedding had spent the night at a home of a lady. To save me the indignity of doing the walk of shame in the morning I was given this t-shirt. It featured the Puma mascot smoking over the Puma logo that had been replaced with the word ‘fuma’. The reason for the longevity of this t is that it was black. Black t-shirts represent your best chance to foster a shirt into full, threadbare maturity and comfort, since black doesn’t show dirt and stains at all. The reason I had to part with this one is that it got caught on an exposed nail and tore.

The best t-shirts are those that stay with you for years, breaking in slowly and conforming to the contours of your body. Therefore the best colors for t-shirts are dark and don’t show stains and dirt (i.e. black).

Everyone is feeling the holiday spirit and wants to show their loved ones their appreciation for them by getting them fabulous presents. Purchasing holiday gifts for your close pals and family is easy, but what do you get somebody who you aren’t that close with but you see on a daily basis such as your boss? The thing that you need to consider when it comes to finding the perfect present for your boss is that it should be both functional and fashionable. You should find something that will make your boss look good while also making their day easier. One thing that is perfect for a boss who works in a job that requires you to wear ID cards is to get them an elegant and chic beaded lanyard. A lanyard is a great way for your boss to keep their ID card with them at all times without having to worry about the hassle of losing it. They can drape the lanyard around their neck, stick it in their pocket or hang it from their bag.

Beaded lanyards come in all colors and styles, so you will not have any problem finding one that perfectly suits your boss’s individual style. If you want to make the gift even more personalized, you can add your boss’s name to the lanyard or even a special message.

Another great gift to get your boss, especially if they are also the owner of the business, is a card printer. Card printers are an excellent way for your boss to save money while adding security to their business. They can print out ID cards right in the office and save money from not sending the ID cards out to different companies to publish.

The holidays are a great time to show everybody in your life just how much you care. You will be able to do the same with your boss by getting them a fantastic present. To do this, all you need to consider is something that will help make their lives much easier. Beaded lanyards and card printers are both excellent gift ideas that your employer is sure to love.
